Installation Tips
Window installation guide
Made to our rigorous standards and your precise specifications, Marlboro windows are easy to install. Our step-by-step guide takes you through the basic process* and provides handy installation tips.
Step 1: If you are replacing an existing window, either leave the old frame and cap the exterior or strip the old frame to the rough studding of the wall.
Step 2: Use insulation to block all air cavities around the opening.
Step 3: Build a new plywood frame to provide a base for the new window.
Step 4: Place the window in the opening and make sure it’s plumb, square and level.
Step 5: Leave a ¼-inch gap around the window for foam insulation and to accommodate any frame shrinkage.
Step 6: Shim the window in place. Make sure that all fastening points are supported. If you are installing a casement window, be sure to shim beneath the hardware for extra support. Once the window is in place, open and close it to make sure it is working properly.
Step 7: Flash exposed exterior wood with brake-shaped aluminum, making sure that the sill slopes away from the window frame.
Step 8: Using screws that are long enough to penetrate the wood frame by half an inch, fasten the window.
Step 9: Insulate any gaps around the window.
Step 10: Caulk the outside and inside of the window frame.
Step 11: Finish the interior.
