Now that the colder weather has reached us, a lot of people are probably thinking about replacing those old windows. Try some of these tips to keep old windows from leaking cold air into your home!
The window insert is one solution to keeping out the cold air. It’s an acrylic window that fits inside your existing window. It helps reduce draftiness and noise. The windows also won’t feel cold because of the extra insert.
If your windows leak a ton of air, try replacing the insulation and fixing the “weather sealed sash.” This will seal air leaks around the perimeters of all windows. Doing this will save you money on your energy bill, seeing that up to 85 per cent of a window unit’s heat loss is through it’s poorly sealed sash. Use material that will withstand the weather and temperature of the location. For example, if you’re living in Ottawa, you will want to use double sealed insulation glass.
Installing a mortise casement fastener can also help protect and hold heat in your home. It also is an added security feature, which is good for any home. Old fashioned ways to help the insulation with your windows is using putty or bubble wrap (but who really wants to do that?).
